New Credit Card Reforms for 2009
After years of unfair advantage over consumers, banks have finally had to take a step back. In May this year, the Federal Reserve Board made its priority to take the lead on issues that have troubled the credit card users for years. At a hearing held in the capital, representatives of banks and the opposition side met to discuss a number of outstanding issues. Is it unfair to raise a Credit card interest rate based on the late payment of another credit card with no relationship? It is unfair to increase interest rates 20-30% on previous purchases unrelated? Is the distribution of lower interest charges to reduce the frequency balances in place A higher rate balances reasonable prices? These are some of the issues addressed by the Federal Reserve Board.
To say the least, banks and Credit unions are not happy. They make a simple argument: if consumers are dissatisfied with their policies then can easily switch banks. In fact, every time you close a bank account and opening a new one that hurts your credit and, in turn, increases in interest rates. While they claim that their rates and taxes are necessary to keep business afloat, it has been shown to consumers and law that these allegations go beyond necessity.
One of the things discussed at the hearing was how the "Fixed" interest rate increases when consumers use their credit card over the line. For example, if a credit card had a limit of $ 2,000 and consumption used up $ 1,900, which were represented as immediate danger and in April increased 15% to 25%. The Board argued that it was misleading and whether banks could so easily impose changes any consumer state, what was the point of creation of instances of credit card limits and fixed APR?
Another issue addressed at the hearing was that of the tandem bike. When users of credit cards have a balance on your next billing cycle (most do) and the APR is higher, the new tax is imposed not only on their new billing cycle, but also affects the balance of your billing cycle of age. The Board argued that any increase in April in a new cycle should not affect the old billing cycles. These are two separate issues and should be treated as such. Moreover, rates interest should not increase in a credit card account when an owner fails to make payments on another account that is not related bill.
Giving consumers a reasonable amount of notice of any change in your credit card account appeared to be a big issue at the hearing. The Board suggested a notice of 21 days between your statement mailing new interest rate and new payment due date. This would give consumers enough time to receive the news and address any unfair or inaccurate information. The Board also considered it necessary that banks and credit unions do not charge a fee when the consumer was paying an overdraft in a checking account, debit card purchase or ATM withdrawal unless it gave consumers the right to choose not to use overdraft facilities.
The new laws discussed at the hearing were prepared all to benefit the consumer. Legislation is expected that these new reforms can help consumers better manage their money, giving them more options and space for making errors. However, there is always the fear that is never enough and that the credit card companies and banks are in the form of new proposals by the installation of new laws and provide more information misleading to consumers.
