Multitasking Virus in our classrooms
A few weeks ago, I returned to the classroom of Dennis Dalton, professor of the university most of my life. From the bottom an amphitheater seating several hundred students, I realized how things have changed at Columbia and Barnard. The classroom was equipped now with a wireless sound system, cameras, video projectors, wireless internet. Students were using computers to record the reading and take notes. Heads were buried in the screen the tap tap of hundreds of keyboards like rain on the roof.
This afternoon, April 16, 2008, Dalton was describing the satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi, construction discussion about the slaughter of Amritsar in 1919, when British colonial soldiers opened fire on unarmed Indian 10,000 men, women and children trapped in Jallianwala Bagh Garden. For 39 years, Professor Dalton has been inspiring Columbia and Barnard students with two semester political theory series that introduces undergrads to the ideas of Gandhi, Thoreau, Mill, Malcolm X, King, Plato, Lao Tzu. His lectures are about themes, connections between disparate minds, the powerful individual's role in shaping our world. Dalton is a life changer, and this was one of his last lectures before retirement.
During a fascinating discussion of 75 minutes of the birth of Gandhian non-violent activism, I found myself becoming increasingly distressed as I watched students cruising Facebook, through the New York Times, the collections of photo editing, text messages, reading People magazine, buying jeans, dresses, sweaters and shoes Ebay, Urban Outfitters and J. Crew, reorganizing their social calendars, e-mail in Gmail and AOL, playing solitaire, doing homework for other classes, chatting on AIM, and buying tickets on Expedia (I made a list because of my disbelief). From my point of view in the back of the room, while Dalton vividly described desperate Indian mothers throwing their children into a deep well to escape the hail of bullets, I noticed a girl in front of me was putting their credit card information at Urban Outfitters.com. She had finally found her shoes!
When the class ended I rode the train home destroyed, composing a letter to students Dalton distributed the next day. Then I began to investigate. Unfortunately, what I saw was not an isolated incident. Classrooms around the country have been invaded by multitasking virus. Teachers are bereft. This is the year that Facebook has taken residence in the national class.
Students defend this trend, citing increased capacity of his generation to multi-task. Unfortunately, the human mind can not, in fact, multi-task without drastically reducing the quality of our process. brain activation for listening is reduced by half if the person is trying to process visual information simultaneously. A recent study by the British Institute of psychiatry showed that control of your email while performing another creative task decreases your IQ 10 points at the time. That's the equivalent without sleep for 36 hours, more than double the effects of smoking marijuana. But to be honest, education, training, versatility feels to me like a symptom of a broader sense of alienation.
I know how it feels to be disconnected. In fact, the crisis that played a major role in ending my career Chess was based on being disconnected from my natural love for learning. Throughout my youth, I had been a creative player, chess aggressive. I loved the battle, and wild dynamic chess felt like an extension of my being. Then in my teens a coach asked me to play in the opposite style, their style of quiet, prophylaxis position, in cold blood. Instead of growing my natural forces boxed me in the cookie cutter mold he knew. Over time, lost contact with my intuitive feeling for chess, and without an internal compass that sank in the waves of fame and high pressure of competition.
I look in the eyes of many children today. Too many primary, primary and secondary students are on hand in the mold of conformity required by big classes, competition for grades, tests with multiple choice questions. The first grader who leaps to his feet when he realizes the math problem is diagnosed with ADHD and medicated to sit quietly with the class. Young learners have immense pressure to perform, to get good grades, but no one is listening to the nuances of their minds. They feel suppressed, they are repressed, and by the time students get to college, that have been disconnected from the love of learning. They were then asked to read 1000 pages in a week and skimming is the only solution. Many students actually engaged in conference Gandhi, who wanted to learn more of their shopping, were taking notes on their computers in a frenzy, while investigating online events Dalton described writing every word of the conference. But Dalton and had provided them with a detailed course packet with all the dates and facts. His classroom is an environment for reflection, introspection, and let the issues resonance sink into your being. Unfortunately, these students the idea of delighting in the subtle waves of learning is almost laughable. Who has time?
The social implications of this educational crisis are huge and the issue must be addressed creatively. We can not afford to lose a generation of apathetic withdrawal. Part the onus is on public policies as No Child Left Behind, standardized tests that are turning education into a march forced, and a culture that bombards us with so much stimuli that it is difficult to know what to focus. But some of the burden is also with parents, teachers and coaches, and students themselves. I recently tried to persuade two smart 11-year-old to give up the game for three weeks. One agreed to the experiment, and send me a description of how he feels the process. The others just could not imagine life without the PSP, even for a day. Here was a girl eleven years old, incorrigible self-proclaimed video game addict!
This story has a happy ending. In the last month of classes, Dennis Dalton discussed the multi-tasking issues with their students, and answered many. Last week, when I returned to hear the final conference race Dalton Barnard, there were only a few children surf the Internet, most students seemed stuck. Many told me they were relieved to turn off their computers and relaxed listening. Some of my former classmates came, and then we threw a party for our teacher. After four decades, inspiring the minds university has decided to nip apathy in the bud by teaching younger children. He will start with high school, but Dennis Dalton, one of the greatest minds of our culture, dreams of teaching kindergarten.
