Credit Card Options for Minors
If you're like many parents, his first thought when reading this title was: "Are you crazy? Why does a child need a credit card? "But believe it or not, the reasons go beyond the mall.
Credit cards are very useful for children traveling abroad or locally with the school or youth group. Not to rent cars, but they will eat almost all strings fast food now accepts. It is also something your child can keep on hand for emergencies. There are plenty of other reasons why children should have credit cards, even as a tool to teach financial responsibility.
Giving a credit card to a minor is actually a decision that only parents or guardians can do. If this is something I have been considering, here are some options for consideration.
It is important to note first that children can not their "own" credit cards. The issuance of a credit card is a contractual matter and for reasons of age, children are not authorized to conclude contracts legally binding. Therefore, a minor credit card must be connected to a parent or guardian account.
Secondary Cardholder
For sale to a minor as a secondary holder is easy. Application and credit control is not necessary because what matters is the creditworthiness of the account holder. A number secondary card may have a different account number, so it is easier to track expenses or to cancel if lost or stolen.
But low, the main account holder assumes all responsibility for all payments. If problems arise, is the account holder whose credit history is affected.
Debit Cards

Charge cards

Prepaid cards

Secured cards

From a parent point of view, is a good alternative to co-signing.
To co-sign or not sign jointly
Most parents do everything possible to help their children succeed. That's admirable, but when it comes to co-signing a credit card, you really have to think twice. Once they reach 18 years, young adults can apply for credit. If you have not established a sufficient credit, however, will not be approved without collateral.
And the co-signer takes responsibility for making payments. If your adult child does not have a job, you will be paying the bills. If your credit is affected. Worse, if your adult child not been taught good money management skills, could end up paying those cards that you co-signed for a long time!
