The implosion of the credit card banks
Anyone with a credit card of a major bank has to read and understand this article. You may or may not have seen Ann Minch, Internet phenomenon YouTube revolt debt or popular Fox News TV CNBC Suze Orman's financial, but what has happened the industry of credit cards in recent months is impressive. The company that tracks credit card chargeoffs ("charge off" is act of making an accounting entry that indicates that a debt is not expected to pay), Fitch reports that from an already high overall figure of 7.4% in January, in August the rate was 11.52% and the number of credit card holders being charged each month would contract the basis of credit card holders about 12% in one year time. That means that every month the customer base of credit card companies fell by almost 1% and assuming those chargeoffs reflects the average amount of debt Credit cards made by other cardholders, the bad debts due to banks rose by the same amount as well (taking into account the cardholders charging may well have come off their cards and higher than average balances).
Taking the figures month by month, and assuming that cardholders are not adding new (probably a negligible figure in this economic climate), for every thousand cardholders in early January, only 880 remain in late December. Fitch expects chargeoff rates continue to increase during the first quarter of next year, so the cardholder base may further erode faster than that. With cash flow of cardholder defaults on drying, the banks are tightening around the world with a greater interest (called "ratejacking" and quota) and some compression when pushed to the brink of failure have to tighten those who stay all the harder. Advanta Bank, once the largest card issuer 11 credit in the country had to close all its letters to the new charges in early June and chargeoff rate reached 55.95% in a single month (June). Advanta now probably less than 10% of cardholders carry out once it had arisen, as the world rate of over 30%.
That happens to the big banks others, only a little slower. For example, the last three months chargeoff rates Bank of America were 12.5%, 13.8% and 14.54% – much worse than averages found by Fitch. In a single quarter, lost 3.5% of their cardholders. In fact, Bank of America lost $ 9.6 billion in its business bench in the third quarter of 2009, representing $ 8,600,000,000 of it in operating profit may or may not be true, it probably reflects the real cash flow, and in any case are the result of taking on large amounts of risk. In other words, if not for the accounting deception, the situation of Bank of America would have been much, much worse than reported.
To rub salt into the wounds of the banks, debt buyers to relieve banks of their claims unpaid credit cards have been pulling sharply. During good times the banks could expect new default acounts in search of twenty-five cents. As the recession worsens, the figure was considerably less than ten cents on the dollar. Failed claims require the addition of "Tier 3" capital to his compensation, which is painful for banks, is a category regulators examined closely to assess the health of a bank and banks work hard to reduce to a minimum in order to avoid triggering additional monitoring regulation of their daily operations. It is likely that some of the "too big to fail" banks will require another bailout. Other banks will have to be assumed by the FDIC, which in turn has almost the funds it needs to conduct orderly liquidation of all failed banks and return the funds of insured depositors.
Officials first suggested FDIC banks to assess the shortfall, but banks do not have the money. Then it was thought that banks have three years of prepaid premiums would solve the problem, but again the banks have not financed this plan either. Apparently, the FDIC will require a bailout.
For consumers, this is the end of the line of credit. For the life of consumers who are affected will return more to a lifestyle totally in cash, while consumers who were heavy users of credit cards and stocks took the fight to either pay, or face an uncertain future after of the consequences of default. Once the economy improves enough to junk debt buyers to access the funds that cease to shop debt payments, consumers will have to deal with arrears being in collections, and in many cases will face lawsuits and wage garnishment, liens, levies and other federal taxes because of debt. Many consumers are not aware that the legal and practical mechanisms are available to avoid these consequences, including in the absence of repayment or bankruptcy
