An encounter with the Bolshoi Ballet

I like many who have read my articles can gather I am a great fan of opera but honestly can not say is a devotee of the equality of ballet, however, this should not be interpreted as not partake of it. Maybe it's because my tastes lean more to the passion of the singers and the drama in opera instead of the grace of ballet dancer. Whatever the reason why you should say that it is an opera fan biggest fan of ballet, but in truth I am a lover of ballet but I did not become one until in Santiago de Chile met the members of the Bolshoi ballet. This was a moment I will never forget as I pointed out all the grace of ballet however before this encounter with the Bolshoi had seen action in Moscow and perhaps there I was introduced to ballet. My decision to visit the Soviet Union was during the autumn of 1988. It was the era of perestroika, Gorbachev glasnosts and Miguel, the new leader of the Soviet Union that many Americans had taken a liking to what they could see some honesty in it. For my part, can not claim that my desire to visit the Soviet Union were influenced in any way by Gorbachev as the true reason for my trip was based on my desire to travel the world in search of all those cities and places I had read in my extensive reading of history. Of course, this also was at a point in my life when I was entertaining dreams of becoming a professional photographer and did account to take pictures of Leningrad (formerly Petrograd, now St. Petersburg) and Moscow. These cities seemed ideal for this purpose, both the architecture that was so different from New York and a sense of history would be enormous. After all there were two cities that had been almost in the center of the War World and the Russian Revolution of 1917. The first of which overthrew Nicholas II, while the second in October (although the Russian Orthodox calendar marks the day as if it had been in November) put the Bolsheviks in power. I had even wanted to visit the Soviet Union before, but the matter was not as easy as I I wanted to. First of all, because the Soviet Union was a closed society that needed a visa, not that it was an inconvenience that I had already visited many other communist countries such as Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the GDR, and Yugoslavia. These countries also require me as an American to have a visa. I can even add how there was a time in 1987 in which as an American was necessary to have a visa to enter France to instead of being a die automatically at the entrance, as was the case of most European countries. The Soviet Union was, however different, even from other communist countries, which only requires me to go to your embassy or consulate, of course with my passport, two photographs and money to pay for the visa. The Soviet Union is not only required me to have the aforementioned, but a prepaid hotel where I was staying, which basically meant that I would have to book a hotel in the cities who wanted to go to New York before going out and doing what is commonly known as "Tour." Not so much my choice, took the second option to continue the tour, though in truth I would rather go alone. It was with the intention of spending Christmas and New Year in Soviet Union in early November, I booked a tour that would include Moscow, Kiev and Leningrad in the order. It was during his visit to the cities in the Soviet Union saw many things, some of which were even strange or at least in my opinion for a Communist country (I already visited a number), for example, in the Soviet Union had shops that accept only hard currency (meaning any currency could be made outside their country of origin) and is beyond the scope of Soviet citizens. Yes, passports were checked upon entrance to stores. It is not that stores like this did not exist in Poland or in other communist countries he had visited, but against the Soviet Union in any country could buy what you want as long as the currency was in the Soviet Union was a case of the Soviets were not even allowed to enter the stores, much less to shop of any kind. Naturally, as happened stores that only foreigners as I could go, there were also stores that foreigners are forbidden, since only Soviets could enter and again passports or were reviewed. I even remember that on one occasion, I asked someone I knew you buy something at the store for foreigners. The Soviet Union also had other factors that made it different from any of the communist countries had already visited, for example, hotel guests were allowed back only the input as a control was established at the entrance, where one was required to show a card away from the hotel. However, this did not present much of a problem for me or for many Soviets (I refer to them as such because I can not claim in all honesty have known who was Russian or one of the many republics that formed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) who managed to enter the hotel despite not be a guest of the hotel. When the card required to access the hotel was not a problem that I was obliged to pay all in hard currency, however, was more than a little upset because the higher price would have been if he had allowed me to buy drinks and other such subtleties in debris, which could get much more market black. However, this was not how I wanted hard currency hotels not only for the cost of the room, but even as one bought them, this is in contrast Poles were the hotels one is obliged to pay for the room in hard currency. It was in Moscow, I stayed in a hotel called "Cosmos" I should add that was the most exclusive in the moment, although in truth its standards were lower after I had known in the west. I arrived at the hotel in December 24 and in my second days in Moscow after spending the first two visits, I had what might be called my first experience in the Soviet Union. Two young that it must be my age at the time (that I'm 21) called the hotel room he shared with a member of my tour group. At first neither my roommate nor I knew what these two men had in mind and be in a country that knew it was not democracy, my American roommate, whose name escapes me and I were a little apprehensive. He was one of these two young men asked us if we had jeans or whatever you care to trade, such as cigarettes U.S. or basically anything. For my part, I felt I had nothing to be worth your time and all I had was my camera (which I was not ready to trade it for anything), a couple of packs of cigarettes (which I am a smoker at the time), the clothes we had brought with me (which included a pair of pants gray jeans, frankly speaking, I was still a little embarrassed even to show given the condition they were in) and my cassettes that included some pop music. It was not long with these two men and everyone in my group of tourists who had come to pick up a bargain, because the room he shared with a history teacher Phoenix to become a national or international black market. I even remember that one of the members of my group wanted to get something for Jimmy Hendrix tape only to learn that neither of these two men (who had brought so many things with them and for us to believe he had a shop around with them) had no idea who he was. Naturally, explained that Jimmy Hendrix was a guitarist and that was on tape but I do not remember what she gave. Of course it is understood that these young people were not getting these things for themselves but to sell to others. One thing did strike my roommate at the time of being curious that led him to ask if they were staying at the hotel to be told one of these two young men who were not. It was then when I asked how they managed to enter the hotel, I was told that only guests hotel, who was a hotel card was then allowed to enter when they told us that because her English was not bad and in fact it was and dressed like Westerns they could get and obviously they had. Later I met two other young men at the hotel who were also trying to do what they could and business was of them that I really learned a lot about how people in the Soviet Union not only feel toward Americans, but many things. It might seem odd somehow I do not remember the names of these two young men, or even what it looked like, but I remember almost everything that happened between us three. First I went with them Red Square instead of going with my group, after all, if I wanted to associate with other Americans, you can imagine where I would have stayed. There are many things had seen through my travels in many countries, from the Colosseum in Rome (now one of the seven new wonders of the world) to the Eiffel Tower, but no these two monuments or other I had seen, in the case could exceed the grandeur of the "Red Square." The place as I observed on that day frozen in December seemed so overwhelming that I honestly did not know what to say. It was not that the Kremlin or in any of the surrounding buildings, such as the one being hailed as the world's largest store toy and the cathedral of Saint Basel were even larger, but the composition created by all that was Red Square had a strong initial impact on me that I will never forget. It was fascinating to see this place and all its features for a moment that gave me the impression of being in a city on clouds. The decorations of the buildings are in such a way that seemed almost unreal. I, naturally, having recovered somewhat from my surprise pulled out my trusty Minolta close to photograph this place and all it includes, which in all honesty, even looked like a small town instead of a great monument. It was in the process of photographing this place I started with a wide angle lens as to capture it all in one shot and then moved to a zoom for St. Basil's Cathedral, the beauty of what in my opinion is underestimated. Needless to say, my camera captured all of the Red Square landmarks, but none as much as I loved San Basilio, which to my mind was typical Russian Cathedral. Of course, all that was a Red Square could not ignore the presence of the mausoleum dedicated to Lenin, which was visited by thousands discover the heat and cold just to see the body of a dead man. As for me personally I did not have the time or inclination to stand in a line, and even a shorter was that of foreigners (as opposed to one for Soviet citizens) just to see a man in what I believe was an act of idolatry. It was there in comparison with the hotel I discovered how cheap life can be in Moscow for someone who had U.S. dollars or other western currency to the point I wanted treat my tour guides about what they had eaten only to discover that it was they who wanted to do the same for me. However, Gorbachev was a different matter together while being driven in a limousine closed, making it impossible for me to be able to get any kind of photography other then one of their cars. Even remembered I heard on the news, the way while being driven through Broadway was actually taken from his car (much to my regret for not being there to capture on film of this historical moment) in a day of extreme cold to shake hands with some of the thousands who lined the streets only to get an overview him. This naturally caused joy to many as the dread of his security guards who were as surprised as you were shaking hands with Gorbachev. There was a case that Gorbachev had not informed their safety than they would do in advance and because of this many cars that security had only discover after a few seconds the car had stopped Gorbachev and Gorbachev was now in a crowd shaking hands with everyone who ran toward him. As expected their safety had to turn back to get him in the fear that something could happen of course not but I can imagine what anxiety that might have been happening at that time. Among these people there were also protests from some of the Soviet republics such as Armenia, who even stated that he felt for the first time there was a man who at least was willing to hear what he had to say. After hearing that Gorbachev is not the most pleasing part was asked what it was what most people did not like and, to this question found an answer that I did not really understand at the time and that was that most people did not like Gorbachev simply because their personal standard of living was much higher than their own. It was for political reasons or ideology or anything like that, but luxury that had surrounded in. I, for my own and made no comment on what he had heard, they prefer not to say anything because he had misunderstood the mentality behind the words and instead of entering a dispute with whom I had treated this humble but pleasant lunch I asked what they thought of American films. It was after a meal (which was not worse than I was in the hotel) in this friendly neighborhood place that I took a chance and went to the apartment of one of these two young men to get what they had promised me was a Soviet military winter coat and a shirt of the football team. It was when I went back to the hotel I rode the Moscow subway for the first time and was surprised by the frequency of the trains were and how deep it was, a factor that I knew had not been undesirable during the Second World War because of the bombing had been presented to this city by the German air force. The Bolshoi, I must say it was somewhat surprising, not so much the great theater that was granted, but not really impressive, or at least not as much as the performance given by this magnificent group of dancers that my father and my grandfather always told me about both. Tchaikovsky "The Nutcracker" was what my group and I was privileged to see the night and although I was already familiar with the wonderful music, I was not so much the dancing that went with it and as I looked, it seemed that this was the most radiant of all the performing arts in relation to its visual appearance. After the ballet, I was back to the Hotel Cosmos in a nightcap that I took at the bar shots vodka accompanied caviar, which was very expensive in America, but in the Soviet Union was literally cheaper than peanuts. The hotel has several bars and it was in each, there were women, some I could not imagine were there to exchange other souvenirs then only for money, while others were in groups looking for any Westerner to buy a drink. By "they" I mean all of them when they arrived in groups, this does not interest me other then just to see that women in the Soviet Union had what I would call up too much, although most of them much more attractive than the average American woman. The next day came to Kiev and beyond was an Aeroflot plane. It was something I will never forget, being on the track and falls asleep in my seat during the long wait was required before take-off, when suddenly awakened by the feeling of my ears getting blocked by pressure. I remember being slightly upset, thinking we had passed, probably all that time on the ground and only then was that the plane will take off when the reality was that he was about to land. This soft launch and the flight was not only not wake me up, I had not noticed, or could have been the fact that my cold was making my own dream as well with my lack of sleep the night before. Kiev was a city interesting, although perhaps not as much as Moscow, but on this particular visit, the only thing I remember was being away from my hotel, I always wonder which one of rest and a Soviet police asking if I could find a taxi to my surprise I did. Is being in one that was taking several passengers, in a sort of makeshift transport as I had known in countries like Argentina and Peru. As for the police, told me in broken English how he was Armenia, a place that had suffered from an earthquake the previous month, which made me tell him what, in fact, donated $ 20 for an organization help. I'm being ignorant of the ballet at that time realized that Nina was a major star of the Bolshoi and it was his humble personality that gave him away, and either as she and her husband were among the most modest people I had ever known. And this despite, or perhaps because both were stars of the Bolshoi, perhaps the best company ballet world, where only the best are allowed. The Bolshoi ballet be to what the NBA is basketball or the "Serie A" football is basically a collection of the best talents worldwide. As a footnote I might add that an English actress named Joyce Frankenberg (later known as Jane Seymour or Dr. Quinn " in the television series of the same name) was once accepted into the Bolshoi in which due to injury was only able to give a performance as a prima ballerina. After have chatted with Nina and her husband quickly got the picture Semizorowa developed and carried him to the hotel where he knew were staying and it was there I met the remaining members of the Bolshoi, who had made the trip to Chile. It took me a photograph that would end in a couple of newspapers in Chile but in truth I do not remember that, but what stuck in my mind was the friendship I made with members of the Bolshoi ballet dancer, especially a very young age of twenty years under the name Anna Petrova. It was through one of the members of his entourage who asked if I wanted to take his photograph and mail it to her that I naturally agree doing. Anna was a shy girl from Leningrad who speaks English well enough to at least hold a conversation which is what he did and what a delight it was like I only took pictures (with a role of film in all of it), but get to know. She is one that could not have passed the mark of 5 feet long and whose weight could not have been more than 100 pounds, but in this body held the power of who can perform amazing grace movements such as ballet requires. As soon as our conversations are concerned, at least during our first meeting, but especially around the ballet with me asking many questions ranging from what he felt was the difference between the Bolshoi and the Kirov with it saying it was difficult to put into words but it was then that I wanted to test the theory of my father, who admitted to there is some truth in. The day had been great, but the night would be no less I was going to be seeing the Bolshoi Ballet perform in the action scenes of many ballets, including "Swan Lake", "Sleeping Beauty" and " Nutcracker "by Tchaikovsky, along with others such as" Giselle "by Adams. I remember especially the latter since it was shown my new friend (who by Unfortunately I lost contact with) Anna Petrova in the lead role and what a performance he gave. In saying this though I must confess not being a connoisseur of the ballet as I am other things as football or sing or act, which makes it difficult for me to give an impartial view of his performance that night, but my eyes was wonderful in the role she played. He danced like a bubble bath, even bouncing on stage but in the air as he delighted all those present, one of them is the President of Chile at the time, Patricio Aylwin. Anna not only to me but all members of the Bolshoi do not dance like they're dancing to the music he was playing for them, but as if their dance was the creation of music, such was the coordination between music and moves that once appeared on it. As if it were an image that was creating the music and how it was that big night, I got to see something that will last me till the end of my days and not all just for the spectacle I witnessed, but the bond of friendship that had developed. The next day I went to the Holiday Inn hotel to dismiss members of the Bolshoi and especially my friend Anna Petrova, who had agreed to meet at a certain time only to discover that she and other members of the Bolshoi, they were returning from a lengthy interview that they were giving to the Chilean press, that lasted more than two hours. However, I do not mind waiting, as it was while I was doing what I met a man from Chile, who had been one of those responsible of bringing the Bolshoi to Chile. We, as one can expect that talked about the Bolshoi (in Spanish) and the way they had been allowed to come to Chile, Pinochet now was no longer president. Freedom of expression, however, had not come entirely as the government, influenced by the Catholic Church had banned the British band heavy metal band "Iron Maiden" played in Santiago on his 1992 tour of South America. Once my friend Anna returned to the hotel our time was limited to say farewell given his late arrival (which he apologized for) and the fact that she and the rest of the Bolshoi had little time to make your flight on time. Anna and I went for a walk around the hotel, which must have lasted about 15 minutes in which we are not talking about ballet, but our lives and tastes in music, his claim as Elvis Presley, apart from Tchaikovsky and I say they found of Iron Maiden, apart from opera and classical music. Unfortunately time was not on our side as I would have liked to take her to a nice place for lunch because, not so much because of my physical attraction to her, but my desire to enjoy his company, however this was not because we had to limit to exchange addresses, so I could send her the photos I had taken it. For my part, I bought a flower from a street vendor as a sign of the short time friendly but we had together. I would send pictures to your grief I'm honestly not sure she never received as I have no answer for it, but this not matter as much as I was really happy, I not only encounter with the Bolshoi, but with Anna Petrova.
