Credit Card Authorization Letter Template ~~Financial Matters of Life ~~
A case for online escrow
The 2008 report on cyber crime IC3 is out right, and the news is not good: cyber crime is again. This, of course, is not surprising as the cyber-criminal is getting smarter and more numerous by the day, while the law continues to catch up.
What is somewhat surprising, however, is that Internet Auction fraud, which was the most reported online crime in the last two years-and not packet head, though 25.5% of all reports, it runs a close second, but most reported crime in line for 2008 is non-delivery of goods and / or payment, comprising 32.9% of all Internet fraud cases.
IC3
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) became operational on 08 May, 2000, as the Internet Fraud Complaint Center, a partnership between the Centre National White Collar Crime (NW3C) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), for serve as a vehicle to receive, process, and refer complaints cyber crime.
IC3 was intended to and continues to serve the broader law enforcement community, including federal, state and local since its inception, IC3 has received complaints running the full range of cybercrime, including online fraud (in its many forms), intellectual rights property, intrusions (hacking), economic espionage (theft of trade secrets), pornography children, international money laundering, identity theft, and a growing list of additional cybercrime.
The Internet Crime Report 2008 is the eighth edition.
The Numbers
Since January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008, IC3 received complaints online 275.284. This is a (33.1%) increase compared to 2007, which saw 206 884 complaints online.
Of all the complaints received, IC3 referred 72,940 of them federal, state and local agencies implementing of law throughout the country for further consideration. The vast majority of these cases was fraudulent and involved a financial loss by the complainant.
The total reported dollar loss from all referred cases of fraud was $ 264,600,000 with an average dollar loss 931.00 dollars for each complaint. This represents an increase of $ 239,100,000 in total losses reported in 2007. Other significant results related to analysis references include:
Non-delivery
undelivered goods and / or payment was, by far the most reported offense, comprising 32.9% of complaints is concerned, this is a 32.1% increase from 2007 levels of non-delivery of goods and / or payment IC3 reported.
Internet fraud and other scams auction
Fraud on Internet auctions accounted for 25.5% of the complaints raised. Credit / debit card fraud made up 9.0% of the allegations raised. confidence fraud, computer fraud, check fraud, and some Nigerian letter fraud first seven categories of complaints referred to law enforcement during the year.
Access Method
E-mail (74.0%) and websites (28.9%) were the two primary channels on which the fraudulent contact took place.
Defend
According to the IC3, the best way to protect against Internet scams facilitated is to stay informed. Keep informed of the latest scams on the Internet can allow Internet users to recognize and report these scams instead of losing money or their identity information in one of them. For the latest scams, we recommend periodic testing of the IC3, the FBI, and FTC websites latest updates.
In addition, the IC3 and its partners have launched a public website, www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com , Which informs consumers about various consumer alerts, tips and trends in fraud.
No combat delivery
The IC3 makes recommendations specifically on the fight against non-delivery of merchandise or payment:
• Make sure you are purchasing merchandise from a reliable source. To the As with auction fraud, check the seller's reputation wherever possible, including the Better Business Bureau.
• Try to get an address physical rather than just a mailbox and a phone number. Also, call your dealer to see if the number is correct and working.
• Send to an e-mail to see if you have an active email address. Beware of sellers who use free email services on a credit card was not required to open the account.
• Investigate other web sites regarding this person / company. Do not judge a person or company for your website fantasy thoroughly check the person / company out.
• Be careful when responding to special offers (especially through unsolicited e-mail).
• Be cautious when it comes to individuals or companies outside their own country. Remember that the laws of different countries could pose problems if a problem arises with your transaction.
• Inquire about returns and warranties on all items.
• The safest way to buy items over the Internet is credit card because you can often dispute the charges if something is wrong. You can also choose to use an escrow or alternate payment service after a thorough investigation into the escrow service.
• Make sure the site is secure when their numbers are submitted electronically credit card.
The fight against fraud in Internet auction
The IC3 also makes specific recommendations on how to combat fraud online auction:
• Understand as much as possible about how Internet auctions work, what your obligations as a buyer, and the obligations the seller is before bidding.
• Find out what measures the site takes if a problem occurs and consider secure the transaction and shipment.
• Learn all you can about the seller, especially if the only information we have is an email address. If it's a business, check the Better Business Bureau, where is located the seller / business.
• Examine the information about the seller and use common sense. If the seller has a history of negative feedback then do not deal with that particular vendor.
• Determine what method of payment, the seller is asking, and when he He / she is asking to send payment. Be careful when mailing address is a PO Box.
• Be aware of the difference in laws governing auctions between the U.S. and other countries. If a problem occurs with the auction transaction has the seller in a country and a buyer in another, could lead to an inconclusive result leaving empty handed.
• Be sure to ask the seller about the birth when you can wait and warranty information / exchange of goods that you may want to return.
• To avoid unexpected costs, find out if the shipment and delivery are included in the auction price or are additional.
• Finally, avoid giving your social security number or driver's license number for the seller, because the sellers have no need for this information.
Next Steps If Victim:
1. File a complaint with the online auction company. To be considered for eBay Protection Program Fraud must submit an online Fraud Complaint within 90 days after the end date list.
2. File a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
3. Contact law enforcement to state and local level (local and state police departments).
4. In addition, contact with agents order in the city of the author and the State.
5. File a complaint with the shipper: USPS, UPS, Fed-Ex, etc.
6. File a complaint with the National Fraud Information Center.
7. File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
Looking closely at the non-delivery
Doing the math does not deliver paint ugly picture:
Since non-delivery is 32.9% of the Cyber Crimes reported 275 284 in 2008, this means that we saw 90 568 cases of non-delivery. Now, since according to the National White Collar Crime Center Report August 2005, The National Public Survey on White Collar Crime, only one in seven is really cybercrime reported to police or a regulatory agency, we must multiply this number by seven to get an accurate count of crimes non-delivery for the year 2008, we are left with 633 976.
This in turn means that 1736 crimes occur every day, or 72 hours each time, 24 / 7.
Or, put another light, here in the United States, once every minute of every day (24 / 7), the product was sold under false pretenses (and gullibly bought and paid for) online.
It is not a laughing matter.
Fraudulent online escrow Protection
One of the key recommendations of the IC3 is to consider the use of a escrow or alternate payment service after a thorough investigation into the escrow service.
However, please take careful note of the line "after carrying out a thorough investigation into the escrow service." Why IC3 include this warning?
It's because online fraud protection, escrow has proved a very profitable online fraud, masquerading as ago as protection, while only the intention of robbery.
It is nothing less than the escrow wolves in sheep's clothing. For this is the world of prayer innocent and unsuspecting, to perpetrate fraud under the guise of helping.
This is the online world where the weary shopper, maybe about scams online auctions and false promises to safeguard your money becomes an online escrow service to ensure that it receives and approves the merchandise before the funds are released to the seller.
He Googles "Escrow Online" and is met with a number of sites, it seems more legitimate than the next. He reads the "we" carefully, and as much of the fine print, as have the time or the mind to absorb. Finally sits in one: Integrity Escrow.
Establishing an email account and is verified by the site on a secure https link. So far so good. When you see the https and the little security symbol on your browser it makes you feel warm and fuzzy.
The following are the details of the transaction, and as a final step, the deposits for the purchase of quantity in this case $ 3,500 in the escrow account created recently.
And, as the saying goes, was the last he saw of that money.
How do they do?
Impersonating the solution
It turns out there was no deposit guarantee of integrity but a spot of impersonation of a trust company in good faith, established, usually in China, Russia or the former Eastern EU-with the sole purpose of stealing your money while pretending to do exactly the opposite, namely, the prevention of theft.
Unfortunately, Custody fraud online is increasing, due to factors such as:
• Online identity / credit card theft
• Anonymity Internet
• An unfortunate lack of awareness about fraudulent escrow sites
• Web hosting companies that allow spammers trust to be created with credit cards stolen, and then allowed to remain in service even after they have been reported.
To this, add a growing number of offenders smart technology with zero concern for their neighbor.
Luckily for which is work that is to follow the line of fraud escrow sites, which are set then set up fraudulent are generally lazy people who do not (probably not) create an original copy if their lives depended on it. No, too much work.
The lazy usually use templates, tailored to fraudulent sites (which abound as well) where they will download a respectable site. With regard to confidence-inducing copy, few places are better than good faith trusts online, where are the words.
Protect your money
How, you, the average Internet user to protect yourself against online fraud custody?
First, it is important that you (as recommended by the IC3) investigation of these sites before each time you send money or goods. First, do a search for WHOIS domain. This will show how long the site has been up to where it is stored, how many times the site has been withdrawn. These tracks. If it smells fishy to you at all, elsewhere.
It's your money. Give it a cyber criminal, probably still has not done so in its list of top ten what to do with it.
There are many online promotions. There are many great online auction houses. There are places of custody in good faith online, but not nearly as numerous as are fraudulent.
The same applies to all online research you can. When you have found a site that looks legitimate, must take one of several additional steps:
• First, while fraudulent sites can buy the certificate needed to be a safe place, which few times;
• Second, you can check in the deposit-fraud.com to see if the site has decided is listed as a fraudulent site for them, but also keeps a list of sites in good faith;
• Third, you can call the department's page to ensure customer that are based in the United States. If you have any doubt about that, I ask you to return the call, and check the caller ID, if an international call, be care. Also, if the site does not have a customer service department, once again, be careful;
• Once you know you're talking to a department based service in the U.S., any questions you can imagine to ensure they are legitimate, such as what bank are used to deposit accounts under warranty, and that is your main contact in that bank (to whom you can call to verify that the online escrow company actually has an escrow account there);
• If the answer is a well-known U.S. bank, and if the customer service representative can provide contact information in the bank, are 99% there. So if you want to reach 100%, make that call to the bank to rule out any vestige of doubt.
Now you have found a company custody in line you can trust to register with them and enjoy your purchase.
For make your life a little easier: there is an online escrow company with the credentials to put your mind at ease.
Licensed by the state California, as well as the states of Idaho and Arizona, which require separate licenses-Escrow.com is the only online company escrow accredited to serve all U.S. states, and indeed it does 24 / 7.
While Escrow.com be responsible for operations of any size, can not make financial sense to use them to low-cost items from your transaction fee is $ 25, and the commission is $ 63 per $ 1,000 value of the transaction if payment is by credit card and $ 32.50 per $ 1,000 wire transfer.
But if the value of their sleep Escrow.com would be essential for any transaction of $ 250 on up.
While Escrow.com is increasingly seen as the escrow company Internet can be used for peace of mind electronic commerce, its staff, on a daily basis, also hunt and work diligently to close fraudulent impostors, found to date.
And spring up like mushrooms, these impostors: there are days when the staff discovers Escrow.com many as ten new sites.
The good news is that as these sites are located, authorities are on alert and the sites are off the air soon.
EBay Weighs In
In the words of the Internet portal more auction of them all, eBay: "Pay safely – beware of fake escrow services when you consider that use them to pay for your eBay item.
"For eBay transactions, you should use only eBay approved escrow company: www.escrow.com .
"A Escrow.com Soon-to-be household name
As Escrow.com gains more and more recognition on their way to becoming a household name family, it becomes harder and harder for fraudsters to defraud the public for the excellent reason that they are not Escrow.com, the only name you know can trust.
Here for peace of mind and a night's sleep.
